The Palm Beach County Music Teachers Association proudly presents its 33rd Annual Scholarship Competition. PBCMTA Scholarship money is available each year to Piano, Voice, Classical Guitar, Wind and String students in Elementary, Intermediate and Senior categories.

Winners will be recognized for integrity, beauty and confidence in performance.



  1. Students must be studying with an active PBCMTA member/teacher for a minimum of 6 months.

  2. All music must be performed from memory with the exception of avant-garde 20th century music

  3. Time limitations will be strictly enforced

  4. One copy of the score of each composition, with measures numbered, must be available for the judges. Photocopy scores will not be acceptable and will eliminate the student from the competition.

  5. Based on the judges’ criteria, single entry contestants in any category will not automatically receive a prize.

  6. Judges decisions are final.

  7. Repertoire examples can be found on our website PBCMTA.org.

  8. Awards are to be used to further a student's musical education.


Application forms may be obtained from the PBCMTA website (pbcmta.org). Application postmark deadline is April 6th 2021. Send applications to our Scholarship Chair: Janet Owens – 8549 Julian Alps Lane, Boynton Beach, FL 33473.

No phone or late entries after April 6th, 2021, can be accepted. Applicants are advised to reserve the entire day of auditions and will be notified by e-mail or phone of precise audition times.

A non-refundable application fee of $25 per student must be included with each application.




  1. Active PBCMTA members may enter up to three (3) students in the Scholarship Competition per year.

  2. In order to compete, a student must be studying with their private teachers, a PBCMTA member, for a minimum of six (6) months.

  3. ALL participants at ALL levels will perform selections from three (3) different music historical periods.

  4. There will be NO "required" piece or "required" historical period.

  5. Length of program will be: Elementary Level (grades 4 – 6) not to exceed a total of 10 minutes in length. Intermediate Level (grades 7 – 9) not to exceed a total of 12 minutes in length. Senior Level (grades 10 -12) not to exceed a total of 15-20 minutes in length.

  6. There will be 3 judges, preferably from outside the PBCMTA membership.

  7. Judges will use their discretion as to whether or not a first place prize will be awarded in each category.

  8. Honorable Mention participants will receive certificates and verbal recognition.

  9. Winners from the previous year may not compete again in that same division.




  1. Please read the PBCMTA Website - PBCMTA.org under Scholarship Competition carefully for requirements and repertoire suggestions.

  2. Students may perform pieces in any order they wish, but please list the pieces on the rating sheet in the order they will perform them. Please, please write legibly.

  3. Double bar repeats should generally not be taken.

  4. One copy of each piece, with measures numbered, must be brought to the competition. Photocopies will not be accepted without written permission from the publisher/composer.

  5. Audition times will be assigned by level, age and instrument. Therefore, these times cannot be changed.

  6. Audition times will be mailed to each teacher.

  7. Students may briefly try the piano before they begin their program, and it is suggested that teachers prepare their students for this tryout.




  1. Teachers should either fill out all forms, including the Application Form and three (3) rating sheets for each student (one for each judge)!! Or check to be sure the students have filled these forms out completely.

  2. The student's name should not appear anywhere on the rating sheets.

  3. The teacher's name must appear on the application form.

  4. The following should be mailed to Scholarship Chairperson, Janet Owens 8549 Julian Alps Lane, Boynton Beach, FL 33473.

  • One completed application for each student

  • Three copies (for each student) of the rating sheet with only the repertoire listed on each sheet

  • $25.00 application fee for each student made payable to: Palm Beach County MTA, Inc. (spelled exactly this way)
